Adding plugins

Plugins extend wordpress' functionalities to insert media and image galleries, or to translate articles into different languages for example…

Where do you find these plugins ? On http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/

Installation

You retrieve plugins as zip files, which you can download onto your desktop by pressing the Download button

There are two methods to install plugins:

Method 1

You can either install plugins directly from the admin, choosing the Extensions menu > New extension, then browse > choose zip file, and eventually entering your ftp codes…

Auto install

Method 2

Or you can expand the downloaded zip file from your desktop,  and transfer its content manually via ftp, into the wp-content/plugins folder on the server.

Then…

Whatever the method, go to the extensions page to activate the new plugin, if necessary.

My advice is to use the second method, even if it is longer, because:

  • it suggests we keep a local copy of the plugin in our blog’s files.
  • some plugins have an inadequate way to organise their files and/or folders, and an auto install won’t change anything about that!

Each plugin normally comes with its owner’s manual, which you will find near the download page or as a readme.txt file. There should also be a configuration, or setup, page (a new link should appear in your admin menu).

Follow this link to see all the plugins I have tested.

"WordPress From the beginning" is written by a French web developer and teacher currently based in Switzerland.

Originally planned in french, both blog and its functions were developped in this language. This explains why not all functions are available in the English version.

However, new translated articles are regularly posted for use by the wordpress' web community.
