Integration of a google calendar

Make your calendar accessible to the public

For this to work, your calendar must be public. Go to your google calendar and tick the “Share this agenda” box in the parameters:

Plugin download

You can download wpng-calendar from http://code.google.com/p/wpng-calendar/. Unzip and transfer the archive’s contents as usual. Activate this new plugin by going into your extension list. A new menu, WPNG calendar plugin, should now appear in the Settings menu.

How to obtain a google data api key

Before proceeding further, you need to go to google in order to obtain a new API key. You get it at http://gd.google.com/html/signup.html and it will be associated with your blog’s domain, the one displaying your calendar. Make a note of it!

Back to the plugin

In the config page, enter the key in the first field.

Get the calendar’s address

Back again to your google calendar, to retrieve its RSS address:

Go to the calendar's paremeters menu

Save the link's target on the XML button

Copy the address in the “Google calendar Feed” field, in the plugin’s settings page, replacing the “basic” ending with “full”.

Integration in a widget

What’s left to do is to activate the widget. Choose the number of coming events that you want displayed in the widget:

A click on the event will cause its apparition in a lightbox.

Integration in a page

Create a new page and add a personalized field called show-wpng-calendar, where the value is the number of weeks to be displayed. The calendar will automatically display with the page, including arrows for navigation within the calendar, if you so desire.

wiki syntax

When you’re in google calendar, under events description, you can add “wiki” formatting such as those described at http://code.google.com/p/wpng-calendar/wiki/WikiFormatting. And if you tick the corresponding option in the plugin’s settings, these formatting will be displayed on your blog.

What’s next ?

In order to go one step further, there would need to be a plugin that publishes, from the blog, a calendar event
